Football Fix?

Earlier this month, Marc and I went to an Air Force game. Since we moved here, several people mentioned the fact that we HAD to go to at least one game. So, what better game to attend than a rivalry? Right? As soon as the Navy tickets went on sale, we were on the computer putting in our credit card number. We had great seats and were ready to see some football!

Note: I'm from the south. Born and raised. My dad played the Auburn fight song every fall Saturday morning on an old 45 record player. We'd sing "Ever to conquer, never to yield" over the scratching sound coming through the speaker of that square box...then go toss the Nerf football in the front yard while wearing our orange and blue. I was told when I was 18 that I could go to Auburn...or I could pay for it myself. I usually gain at least 5 pounds from tailgating, and I have gone hoarse from yelling with 87,451 fans. And yes, I have been known to even crouch behind furniture during a crucial play because I just can't stand to watch. I'm a college football fan...OK?

So, I think my expectations for this college football game may have been a little high due to the fact it is considered a rivalry. But before I go any further, let me say, I enjoyed it. I really did. There were some really cool moments, but... people, this is a rivalry! Air Force has been beaten the last 7 years by Navy. You would think there would be some hype, smack talking, one side would be wearing classy orange Polos with the little, blue horse...and other side mullets. But I didn't see any of that! How am I suppose to know that this is a rivalry?

With that being said, we tried to get our southern football fix here in the west, however... it just wasn't the same. Disclaimer: My perspective is not meant to offend these men who love their country and will later serve it proudly. It just simply shows my obsession in a different light, and the fact that I'm spoiled rotten.

Here we are "tailgating"...yes...we stopped at Subway, but we did have candy corn and peanuts. Very lame compared to Funchess Hall.

The pre-game was impressive. Here, all the cadets take the field with their unit. They march in and then once dismissed, they simultaneously run to the stands to claim their seat for the game. It was fun to watch them go a little crazy after such a disciplined event.

Here comes the most awesome fly over I've ever seen! See "Fly Over" post for the video. It was by far my favorite part of the day!
The band taking the field playing "The Air Force Song" while the crowd sang (well...at least the lyrics they knew i.e. "wild blue yonder" and "nothing can stop the USAF". Just a pet peeve...learn your team's fight song. That goes for you too, Cam! Here come the Falcons...through the inflatable helmet? Where was the smoke? And the video montage? Just asking...that's all.

The team sported new uniforms for this game. I heard a guy behind me say that in all his years of attending AF games, this was the first time he'd seen new uniforms. They were sharp looking and instead of having their last name on the back...they read either "Freedom" or "Service". A nice touch!
Like I said, Air Force had not beaten Navy in 7 years, but came out victorious this year! It was a good game to watch...and once the clock ticked down to :00...the cadets stormed the field...while the song "At Last" by Etta James played over the loud speaker. No...I am not kidding. A real "moment" crusher-- you just beat a HUGE rivalry for the first time in 7 years...you are not at your wedding reception having your first dance as husband and wife! C'mon AF...and may I speak to your stadium "music man"?
Final Score:
Air Force - 14
Navy- 6
A beautiful day to watch a football game...even if it wasn't quite what I thought it would be...to each his own...even if I am a bit (OK--a lot) over the top. War Eagle from Colorado Springs!

Year Two

Our 2 year wedding anniversary was October 25th. Marc planned our trip, and he kept it a surprise until the day we left. He looked for awhile before finding a quaint little lodge in Estes Park, Colorado. This mountain town is located on the outskirts of the Rocky Mountain National Park, a part of the west that, in my opinion, is a "must see".

Here is a picture of our lodge. This was actually taken the morning of our anniversary. There was a dusting of snow, our first of the season.

We arrived late on Friday night, so our surroundings were not visible. However, as we pulled into the parking lot, a man pointed out an elk eating some bushes towards the corner of the building. We saw him from a distance, but look who was right outside our balcony the next morning. He was huge...and didn't seem to care we were there. Estes Park is actually known for having elk in the area. This was just one of many.
This was the view from our balcony. There was a creek that ran behind our lodge, and I loved cracking the door to listen to the water...even if it meant turning on the fire logs to warm up. Marc was thankful the lodge's pricing included the gas bill for the weekend. :)

Here is an entire herd of elk that we came upon while out and about. We pulled over to take the picture, and I counted about 25 of them. They were hanging out near a stream that actually backed up to a neighborhood. No big deal...there's just a herd of elk in my backyard!

On Saturday, we decided to hang out on main street. There were lots of cute shops and restaurants. Of course, we were desperate to find a TV for a particular game being played at 1:30. Thanks to the Nebraska game, we were not considered a "top priority" in a particular spot after walking 10 minutes to get there. We left hoping to find a "No Husker Zone" and came upon The Wapiti Restaurant and Pub...pulled up to the bar...and asked for, "CBS, please." Done...and we were in business. War Eagle from Estes Park!

On Sunday, we ate a nice brunch at a local resort then decided to head into the park. We were hoping to hike quite a bit that day, but the weather was not the best. It was very overcast and WINDY. We decided to give it a go anyway, and we are glad we did. We stopped just outside the park and took the only picture of us together from the entire trip. Thanks picture post...we were glad you were there!

Once inside the park, we drove to Bear Lake. As we climbed higher, the weather became snowy and just down right c-o-l-d. We were somewhat prepared for the elements, so we suited up and hiked to the lake. Beautiful...but my Florida boy didn't want to hang out too long.

As we left Bear Lake, and headed down the mountain, the weather improved and we made several stops along the way. We were able to explore a bit and take some fun pictures. I decided that I could spend an entire summer in this park, hiking and biking. I'm sure you'd see something new and breath-taking everyday. Here's my mountain man taking in the scenery...

So...how do I feel about Year Two? It's hard to sum up life in words on a page. Mostly, I'm amazed everyday how this guy loves me. Wrapped up in my own insecurities, he continually looks past them and embraces my faults better than I do myself. However, Marc is not my Saviour, a thought that has been turning over and over in my heart lately. It's easy for me to look to him for "life", but Marc, even if he desperately tries, cannot provide the abundant life I'm promised in Christ. However, my life is better with my husband of two years because of the promise he made on October 25, 2008 to love and to cherish me...no matter what. A thought that can boggle my mind at times...but a thought that continually points me to Christ.
This sign was hanging on a store front the day of our anniversary. And even though we'll both be 88 years old on our 57th, I can't wait to get there and celebrate with you. I love you Marc Smith...Happy Anniversary.

Got Oxygen?

Living in Colorado automatically lends itself to outdoor activity. There are people sporting around here everywhere...especially running. I don't necessarily enjoy this "sport", but I do like the idea of it. So...since I'm here...I figure why not join in on the "fun". Right? Just one little hitch when participating...and it's called altitude. I mean...you do need oxygen to breathe, and when running at 6000 feet plus, every breath can be an absolute struggle. We have been told that you acclimate to the "height" after 4-6 months...but I'm not there yet.

Marc and I have been running with our friends Matt and Julie on Tuesdays at a local restaurant called Salsa Brava. They have a runner's club. We run a 5k(ish) course, and then eat dinner. We've done this about 5 times, so we thought we were ready for the real deal.

We ran our first 5k on Saturday, October 9th at "America the Beautiful" city park. It benefited the Humane Society, so there were lots of 4 legged friends to dodge along the course. Marc did great (apparently playing soccer your entire life makes a 3.1 mile run a breeze), and I finished. Nuff said.

At the start...

America the Beautiful park....

Got oxygen?...
Our next 5k is the "Turkey Trot" sponsored by the YMCA on Thanksgiving Day. My hope is to continue working on my running while living in Colorado. I'm even kicking around the idea on a half-marathon. If that happens...it won't be at 6000 feet. How 'bout Hawaii Honey? :)

The Watsons Go to Colorado

I can't tell you how excited I was to see this friend. After seeing each other everyday at school for the last 9 years (seriously?), 4 months was about my cap! Myra and Tim came to visit us for a long weekend, and it was great. Here are a few (and I mean just a few) pictures of their visit to Colorado. This is Myra and me at the Royal Gorge. It is a huge(!) canyon in which America's highest suspension bridge stretches across. Very impressive and hard to capture in pictures. We spent most of the day there. You can walk/ drive over the bridge, ride an air tram across, or take a train to the very bottom where the Arkansas River rushes. Truly amazing scenery and a beautiful day to boot!
Marc and I picked the Watsons up in Denver Saturday morning. Considering what a Rock-n-Roll music buff Tim is, we knew that Red Rocks Amphitheatre would be a great place to go. Here's Tim pointing out his favorite band of all time--ZZ Top. His "fan-dom" of this band is immeasurable...so much so that I have even seen ZZ Top in person (courtesy of Tim)...and my nieces affectionately like to call him "ZZ Top". You wouldn't believe the music legends who have stood on this stage and performed at Red Rocks. All the way from the Beatles to Willie Nelson. It's pretty cool to be standing where they have stood. Here are Myra and Tim taking it all in after Tim sang "Sharped Dressed Man". As you can see, the crowd loved it. :) We left Denver (after a quick stop at Brandon Pub's to watch some of the Auburn/ Arkansas game--thank you friends!) and headed south to the Springs. Myra wanted to see as much scenery as possible, so we decided to drive them to Helen Hunt Falls. We hiked just above the falls, and here they are along the trail. Pikes Peak is a must if you visit Colorado Springs. The weather had been perfect while they were here...until Monday...the day they were heading to the top of the peak. The weather at the top is about 35-40 degrees colder than down in the Springs. Considering it was about 50 degrees that day...guess what the peak was like? Can you say, "North Pole"? Zero visibility...snow...wind...freezing temps...and an experience to remember. I'm hoping the doughnuts at the top and the fudge at the bottom made it all worth it. Right Tim?
After their blustery visit to Pikes Peak, we ate Taco Soup and lit the fire pit for some s'mores. It was a great way to end our visit...just hanging out and enjoying each other's company. Did you know that s'mores are known to cure any "blues" of friends leaving after a great visit? Well...they help...but I'm pretty sure they are not medicinal. :)
It means so much to have friends come and visit us. Having a little piece of "home" around for a couple of days is good for the soul. I'm thankful for these friends. They took care of me before I became a "Mrs.", and I will always consider them family.
Myra...I miss seeing you everyday. Work was always better because you were there. I know this year is different for the both of us, but I hope we continue to embrace the "different" and the lessons this year continues to offer us. I love you.

10.10.10

10.10.10 marked four years since we have known each other. Our first (blind) date was 10.10.06. That night we ate at Flat Rock Grill and carved pumpkins. We are so grateful for each other and our time here in Colorado. Here's how we celebrated....

Fly Over

Marc and I went to the Air Force game this past Saturday. They played Navy...a huge rivalry. I'll blog later on our college football experience here in the west...but...I had to post this first. This was the fly over before the game...so cool!

By the way, Marc took the video using his iPhone 4...isn't technology amazing...and ridiculous at the same time? He was proud of the footage. :)
